ACCELERATED OYAP – UNIONS
WHAT ARE THE ACCELERATED OYAP – UNION PROGRAMS?
Operates in partnership with one of the Unions. These four to six credit programs allow Grade 12 students to become Apprentices leading to employment in one of the three Unions. Students wishing to jump start their career while in high school should consider the following options:
- Students will begin the second semester in a co-op class for pre-placement programing followed by pre-apprenticeship programing at one of the Unions.
- Length of the pre-apprenticeship programing varies from February to April.
- May and June, students will be placed with an unionized contractor while being enrolled in co-op. Students will not be paid. Students may be offered part-time employment over the summer as preparation for full-time employment.
- Successful completion of the program may lead to a Registered Apprenticeship…
- Limited spots available. Only students who wish to pursue a career as a Plumber/ Steamfitter, General Carpenter, Construction Craft Worker, Concrete Finisher or an Electrician should apply. This is a highly competitive program!
- Students will be registered as participants of the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).

- Students will earn up to (4) Co-op credits.
- Students in the LIUNA program could earn (2) high school credits and (2) co-op credits.

A co-op program selection form must be completed as part of the application to any accelerated OYAP program.

This unique program gives students the opportunity to:
- Jump start a career in the skilled trades toward apprenticeship training.
- Explore potential careers in an apprenticeship trade.
- Gain important connections with potential employers.
- Obtain important health and safety training.
- Acquire technical training in up-to-date community facilities.
- Develop an understanding of employer expectations.
- Increase confidence and self-reliance.
- Make a smooth transition into postsecondary apprenticeship programs.
- Leads to employment as an apprentice with a Registered Training Agreement.
- Fulfills SHSM program requirements.
Students Must:
- Undergo an interview with the union
- Note – students must be 16 years of age to participate in a construction sector trade and to work on a construction worksite.
- Have earned 26 credits.
- Grade 12+ students with an OSSD are eligible to apply.
- Be on track to graduate in June or are a returning graduated student.
- Complete the Co-op Program Selection Form, Parent & Student Information Consent/Contract Form and Student Readiness Form.
- Have their own transportation to and from the union training centre and work placement sites. Many OYAP placements are not on a bus route and can be at different locations throughout the program.
Desirable assets:
- Complete a corresponding Grade 12 Technology course.
- Complete, at minimum, the Gr. 12 Tech Math course.
- Previous work experience (co-op or part-time) in the skilled trade.
- Demonstration of use of tools for the trade
